Last week, we discussed creating a comprehensive checklist to help you locate your photo and media collection in order to get you started with your organizing project. Now, that you have found your photos, it’s time to create a plan.
During the next seven days, we’ll explore how to create a photo organizing plan based on your personal needs and what’s most important to you. What are your photo goals and what would a well-organized photo and media collection look like for you? Then we will give you tips to help you strategize a plan to digitize and back-up your photos.
Even if you’re not ready to do the actual organizing, creating a plan will prepare you for whenever the time is right to start this project.
Tip #8
Find Your WHY
In order to create a photo organizing plan that meets your needs, you have to ask yourself WHY? Why do you want to do this? To help you find your WHY, try this exercise. Answer the following five questions or simply write down five reasons your photos and family movies are important to you. Your answers to these questions will help you determine the best way to organize and preserve your photo memories.
- Why are my photos and home media important to me?
- Why do I want to organize my photo collection?
- Why do I want to share my photos?
- Why do I want to preserve my photo collection?
- Why do I need help organizing my collection?
For some people, the answers to these questions will involve tracing family ancestry or simply that our personal photos help us to remember significant moments in our lives that we want to share with future generations. Ask yourself how you would feel if you could easily find and share the photos you care most about?
