After you have edited your collection and digitized your photos, it’s time to start exploring your storage options. The question of storage can be broken down into two categories – Print or Physical Storage and Digital Storage.
Tip #12
Store Your Original Prints
The criteria for proper print or physical storage for photographs, home movies, audio, and memorabilia should be:
- containers made of archive quality materials
- storage in main part of house (not basements, attics, or garages) with a consistent room temperature and conditions of 50% humidity.
For more information about the proper handling of personal photographs and memorabilia, visit the family archives preservation page of the NATIONAL ARCHIVES website.
Store Your Digital Files
Once your items have been scanned, they can be digitally stored. Storage options for digital files include:
- flash drives for short term storage
- external hard drives
- removable media like DVDs, Blu-ray discs, data discs
- The Cloud
