When writing your family stories, involve all of your loved ones who would like to be part of this project. Children have a unique perspective on events and other family members. Make sure that the children in your family are included in the process of writing your photo narratives.

Tip #21

Interview The Children In Your Family

To help you get started, try this simple exercise. Create a list of interview questions. These questions can be based on photos or home movies that feature the children you are interviewing. You can also incorporate some general questions that could serve as prompts to help them relate their stories. Here are some sample questions you might want to include:

  1. What is your first memory?
  2. What is one special thing you remember about your grandmother, grandfather, uncle, aunt, or any older relative in the family?
  3. If you could relive one day from when you were younger, what day would that be?
  4. Show them a series of pictures that they are featured in and ask them which one is their favorite and why.
  5. Can you describe your favorite vacation from when you were younger?
  6. Who is your favorite family member?
  7. If you could be anyone in the family for just one day, who would it be? (This could be someone they never met but only heard about.)
  8. How did your parents or grandparents meet?
  9. Can you tell me a funny story about your family?
  10. What was your favorite holiday food and who made it?

You can personalize your list of interview questions to fit the child you will be speaking with. Don’t forget to record their answers. These conversations could become part of your family’s oral history.
