In the past two weeks, we have accomplished a lot. We have:
- created a comprehensive checklist to locate and gather your photo and media collection
- designed a photo organizing plan based on your personal needs
- researched criteria for hiring a professional photo organizer
For the next seven days we are going to be discussing “Capturing Your Family Stories.” Every image in your collection has a story behind it. Labeling and dating doesn’t always give the personal details needed to make a picture come alive. Capturing the stories that go along with your family’s photos and home movies make your photo legacy complete.
In organizing my own photos, I realized that even though I meticulously label and date everything the photos themselves don’t give the complete story of what was happening at the moment the picture was snapped. This began a personal project that I call my Family Photo Narratives. With specific pictures, I include a short narrative that gives a little bit more insight into what was happening beyond the range of the camera lens at that moment.
Here is an example:
Tip #15
Create Family Photo Narratives
To get started creating your own family photo narratives, try this exercise:
- Choose 5 favorite photos.
- Ask family members to tell you what they remember about the event that was taking place, the people depicted in the photo, or the location of each one.
- Write down their stories or record their reactions with your phone.
This exercise can also be done with home movies.
You can create photo narratives before, during, or after your photo organizing project. It’s never too late to record your memories, a family story, or even just names & dates. Embed the details in the metadata,or keep digital/handwritten notes with the JPGS/prints.
